Orphanage and Research Center
MUTAPA is a direct partnership with the Zimbabwe Elephant Nursery (ZEN) , which is located on the outskirts of Zimbabwe’s capital city of Harare on a beautiful and spacious plot of land. There, we have built a large and expansive “boma”, or stable-like facility, for the housing of the orphans. This boma is currently home to six orphaned babies, who require round-the-clock staffing at significant cost.
In November 2015, ZEN signed an agreement with the Impisi Conversation Trust for the sustainable management of Nyatana Wilderness Area for Phase 2 of the project. Nyatana is a beautiful nature preserve where the orphans will be reintroduced into the wild. To date, the project has also helped equip and train 11 anti-poaching scouts to ensure safe haven for the elephants.
In addition to supporting the myriad of costs associated with animal rescue and care, MUTAPA funds are going to support the establishment of a full-fledged research center that will ensure a growing body of knowledge and educational opportunities to promote conservation in the region.
